Bitdefender is a top Mac antivirus program. It has a high level of malware detection and a host of other useful security features. It isn’t without faults.
The default interface is easy-to-navigate and divides features into 3 categories: Privacy, Protection, and Utilities. The Protection tab focuses on features you’d expect from an antivirus program, such as real-time scanning, firewall monitoring, and ransomware countermeasures. The Privacy tab provides methods to protect yourself online, like a secure browser that runs websites within an sandbox, which protects you from malware that is infecting your browser. The Utilities tab is a place to find optimization tools, as well as a file shredder which overwrites files using exclusive algorithms to render them unrecoverable even if they’ve been deleted.
Other features are available on premium plans, such as a handy password manager and an Anti-Tracker solution which can block excessive tracking by a variety of websites. The program comes with a vulnerability scanner that can spot obsolete applications and passwords that are not secure, or Windows updates that haven’t been applied. It also offers a quick custom scan that only takes five minutes, much faster than other competitors such as Norton and TotalAV.
The only downside to the application is that it takes a long time to install, which can frustrate users who want to begin. Additionally, the app’s “Reveal in the Finder” option doesn’t work this is a bizarre absence for an antivirus application that competes with other products that can accomplish the same thing with just few clicks.
